Build Diary for 2013-04-07 - Frame The right clutch centre plate turned up so I mated the engine and gearbox so that is all ready to go in and the aim was to try and get the rolling chassis with the frame and engine all sorted. Although the weather was lovely and not too cold, I didn't quite get as far as I would have liked, but I am chuffed with progress so far.
I collected the frame from the Miglia workshop on Saturday. it was a different frame to the one I modified as that one served its purpose as a template for the new jig, and then got sold as part of a kit that needed a quick turnaround - I was not in a hurry so I let them have it.
So with the new frame I made the cut at the rear for the petrol tank filler (it comes welded up for strength in transit) and then set about bolting it in temporarily so I could ponder over the pedal assembly. All the bolt holes lined up except the two front ones that just needed a bit of persuasion with a hammer to fit.
The main job then was to offer up the BMW e30 pedal assembly and servo unit and modify the frame so it would function correctly. With a few trial runs and a few cups of tea, I figured that it would be best sat around the steering column. This meant it was a bit too tight and so I would need to space out the clutch pedal and the bracket for the clutch master cylinder. The pictures show the progress of carefully grinding out the welds and then moving and re-welding the pedal and bracket (after marking their positions relative to each other!).
With the pedals spaced around the steering column, the next job was to mount the remote servo on the passenger side and set up the push rod so it all moved freely. This meant cutting and welding the servo mounting bracket into the frame and then checking for adequate wheel clearance. I will make up a splash guard for it once I have the body on and everything adjusted correctly.
The steering column outer had to be shortened and additional strengthening brackets welded on so ensure that there is minimal flex when the pedals are operated. By the end of the weekend, it was all welded in and working and with plenty of clearance for the steering column, I was pleased with the progress.
Oh yes, I also mounting the handbrake in a little recess on the centre tunnel and welded in a bracket for the compensator arm. No I didn't get the engine in but, that is a simple job for next weekend.
